Refugees and asylum seekers and the immigration process at large has recently been on display for the world to see. With the recent events in Afghanistan, many people have desperately been seeking someone to help them. Oscar Barbosa, an immigration lawyer, has been helping refugees and asylum seekers from Afghanistan find their way out of the country and into the United States.
In coordination with other volunteer organizations and the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the attorneys of Diaspora Law have been able to guide families and individuals in the parole and repatriation process from Afghanistan. Following the days of the fall of Kabul, it was imperative for organizations to assist in rapidly changing situations.
In addition to Refugee matters, the immigration firm Diaspora Law, and the attorneys are working to help people in all 50 states with cases ranging from individual immigration to deportation cases.
“I see immigration as a human rights-oriented practice. I currently provide consulting services worldwide, previously working with the Jesuit Refugee Service, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and with the Service Employees International Union. As an Attorney, I have been able to explain complicated options in understandable terms to my clients,” Oscar Barbosa, one of the attorneys explains.
Now more than ever, this practice is incredibly important to many people as it was to his family. He knows that many immigrants in the United States feel unwelcome and struggle to navigate the tough system, so he teaches people how to get from point A to point B as he helps them with their immigration status.
“Immigrants navigate against the current in an unwelcoming immigration system. I enjoy assisting families in obtaining successful results or at least in understanding the system and requirements. ” Oscar Barbosa details.
Oscar hopes to continue to grow the law firm and aid more and more people. The personal level connection that he feels day in and day out keeps him going even when situations are tough. His advice for those who wish to open a similar practice is to always be stubborn and persistent even when you feel like there is no hope.
“Be persistent and dedicated, it is crucial when it comes to immigration law. My positive interactions with lawyers when I was young was helpful to forge a career path with the desire to help others. I’m certain that my clients have a different feel about our law firm, than the competition.” Oscar says.
